Sole ownership
The horse will be yours exclusively, will run in your very own colours and you will be responsible for all costs involved. This type of ownership is suited to a high risk investor. Benefits can be rewarding as well as costly, depending on the horse. There have been some great success stories regarding horses earning large profits, Laredo Gold and Crimson Palace are two that come to mind from our stable. Laredo Gold was purchased at a small sale in Durbanville for R10 000 after he was thrown off the Cape yearling sales and the 10 time winner went on to earn R800 000. Crimson Palace was purchased for R300 000 and after winning the group 1 Paddock Stakes was sold for 2 million rand to the American syndicate Team Valour.
Partnerships and Syndicates
These options allow you to race with other enthusiasts. Syndicates allow up to 20 people to partner together, increasing your chance of owning more horses, great for a group of friends to race together. The syndicate's name appears on the race card and managed by a selected nominee. Partnerships allow individual colour holders the option to purchase shares in various Horses therefore reducing expenses.
Companies and CC's
You can register your company name or open up a cc in your horse's name.
Leasing a horse
Sometimes the breeders wish to retain ownership of a horse for breeding purposes. In this case they will lease the horse to an owner for its racing career. In most lease agreements the breeder takes 20% of the winning stake (1st place, not the place stake). This can be negotiated with the breeder. The lessee will be responsible for all stable fees. This is a value option for first time owners as there is no upfront capital required.
Costs involved?
Stabling costs at Mike Bass Racing are very competitive with Western Cape racing and will gladly be disclosed upon further interest. However, there are monthly costs besides your initial capital outlay including farrier costs, vet bills, vitamins etc. These costs vary monthly.
If you have any further queries regarding horse racing, please do not hesitate to contact Mike Bass Racing and we will assist you in any which way we can.
