Mark Bass - 20/05/2009

With such a rich heritage and steeped breeding tradition, it will be a sad day for South African Racing when we bid farewell to the end of a great breeding era as Odessa stud disperses their final band of mares on public auction this week.

Lionel Cohen, CEO of Equimark Equestrian Sales and owner of D Cohen & Sons, is a name that has become synonymous with achievement when it comes to breeding and racing in our country

Mark Bass - 21/05/2009

Pocket Power will make his much anticipated return to the track on Sunday where eight entries have been accepted in the pinnacle stakes over 1450 meters at Clairwood.  Although a distance far short of his best the Bass stable are confident he is far enough forward in his prep to give a very good account of himself here, reports Mike from Durban.

Search for Secretariat
Mark Kram Jnr - Business Day Sport Monthly - 21/05/2009

The 135th running of the Kentucky Derby signalled the beginning of American racing’s annual quest for a transcendent star. It’s just possible they’ll die trying

Given I am something of a devotee of horse racing, a woman I know asked me last year if I had an opinion on the harrowing scene that had occurred the week before in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs: The runner-up in the race, the filly Eight Belles, broke both front ankles and had to be euthanised as a capacity crowd and worldwide television audience looked on in horror.

Pocket Power now ranks 7th in the World
Mark Bass - 28/05/2009

Pocket Power’s scintillating debut performance in Kwa-Zulu Natal, has shot the champion gelding to 7th on the current world rankings.

Dubai Duty Free winner, Gladiatorus was announced as the top ranked horse in the world, while the Mike De Kock trained Eagle Mountain was ranked 4th . Pocket Power joins the likes of the 2009 Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird and the Champion filly Rachel Alexandra, winner of this year’s Preakness Stakes in 7th position, just 6 points adrift.

June journey to the July
Leon Setaro - Interbet - 05/06/2009

One of the traditional season plums tomorrow at Greyville, a day meeting for the Daily News 2000 (3yr olds) and the Woolavington (3yr old fillies), both Grade1 events headlining the weekend's affairs. There's also the Lonsdale Stirrup Cup (Grade3), and of particular interest in the 5th race, the 2009 KZN debut of JHB raider Smart Banker from the Charles Laird yard.

Nevvay validates his pedigree
Mark Bass - 08/06/2009

Nevvay put it all together to clinch his first group 3 on Sunday when triumphing in the Lonsdale Stirrup Cup, with stable companion Thundering Jet running a much improved race to finish a close up third.

The well bred son of Western Winter has thrived since his arrival in Natal. His prep run over a mile at Scottsville two weeks prior was somewhat surprising considering his lengthy layoff, and to follow this up with another super win here is indicative that he has reached the potential we always thought he was capable of.

Gold Challenge promises sibling rivalry
Mark Bass - 11/06/2009

A field of 12 top horses, including 8 entries for the Vodacom Durban July, will contest the R750 000, Grade 1 Gold Challenge over 1 600m at Clairwood Racecourse in Durban on Saturday.

The Gold Challenge, originally called the Champion Stakes, is run on traditional weight for age terms and usually attracts the highest calibre of race horse in the country. This year however, the field appears fractionally weaker in comparison to years gone by and Pocket Power stands out clearly as the horse to beat.

Mark Bass - 15/06/2009

Pocket Power added the illustrious Gold Challenge to his trophy cabinet this Saturday when overcoming a top field in the group 1 classic, and now appears to have the Durban July at his mercy in three weeks time.

This race has eluded him in the past, after finding himself too far back on both occasions, but he finally set the record straight with a dominant galloping display from a much handier position to win by a length under a superb ride from Bernard Fayd’Herbe despite the late flying Kapil.

FridayTheir preparations have gone perfectly. The runners all had light canters this morning and all their work is done. Let’s hope we have some good fortune tomorrow.

Bad news is rain is forecast for July Day with a 60% chance. If it rains a great deal, the soft underfoot conditions won’t particularly suit Pocket Power who will have to give away that much weight in the heavy going, but no signs of any impending heavy rains, so it’s not too much of a concern.

Two months to D-Day for SA champ Pocket Power
Nicci Garner - 17/10/2009

FEW people will bet against three-time Horse of the Year Pocket Power scoring the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate-J&B Met double for the fourth consecutive time when the Cape’s premier events are run in January next year.

Those are the two primary objectives mapped out by ruling Cape champion trainer Mike Bass for the problematic seven-year-old son of Jet Master. First, Pocket Power will have a pipe-opener in the Diadem Stakes over 1200m at Kenilworth on Saturday 19 December.

PE Raiders target the Met
Mark Bass - 26/10/2009

Bill Of Rights could be considered unlucky not to have secured his Algoa Cup double but Sunday’s raid on Fairview was substantiated with a win and two places from our three runners.

A clever ride aboard the top weight from the Striker Strydom ensured Surfin' USA top spot in this years running of the  grade 3 Algoa Cup. Karl had Bill of Rights well positioned in midfield and the pair soon drew clear in the closing stages.

Apprentice Jaswick Jordaan on the radar!
Leon Setaro - Interbet - 12/11/2009

I'm a believer in natural born talent, the x-factor, genetic predisposition.. call it what you like but it applies across all spheres of life. Horse racing is no exception and this is particularly applicable to jockeys, those riders that perch their lives atop highly strung, galloping horseflesh at speeds in excess of 60km/h. It's rush hour traffic out there and not everybody's cup of tea but for some, this is where the dream culminates - on the track winning races.

Happy Birthday Madiba!

Johannesburg - Nelson Mandela, South Africa's first black president, turns 92 years old today, as the world celebrates the first international day in his honour.

Global leaders and ordinary people in South Africa and abroad have committed to devoting 67 minutes of their time to community service, to mark the number of years Mandela spent in politics.

His birthday was in 2009 recognised by the United Nations as "Nelson Mandela International Day" and will be celebrated across the world.

The increasingly frail leader is spending the day with family at his Johannesburg home.

Local politicians united in wishing the anti-apartheid icon well on his birthday, with international leaders hailing his contribution to global politics and the fight for human rights.

Testing Mile proves too much for What A Winter
Mark Bass - 21/12/2010

Post mortems reports are never pleasant to compile, especially when it comes to the Guineas favourite, but there is a good saying that goes - You can’t expect to win until you know why you lose. It was a gamble we had to take with What a Winter, but this testing mile was simply too much for him.

Do you believe in magic ?
Robyn Louw Sporting Post - 23/12/2010

Peter Pan: There oughta be a fairy for every girl and boy.
Wendy: Oughta be? Isn't there?
Peter Pan: Oh, no. Children know such a lot now. Soon they don't believe. And every time a child says "I don't believe in fairies", there's a fairy someplace that falls down dead.

According to the New York Times Children exhibit a form of magical thinking by about 18 months, when they begin to create imaginary worlds while playing. By age 3, most know the difference between fantasy and reality, though they usually still believe (with adult encouragement) in Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy. By age 8, and sometimes earlier, they have mostly pruned away these beliefs, and the line between magic and reality is about as clear to them as it is for adults.

However, Christmas is the time of the year when children of all ages can briefly suspend reality and indulge in a little magic and I was recently treated to a rather special early Christmas present.

In JM Barries novel, Peter Pan is described as a young boy who still has all his first teeth, wears clothing made of hemp and is the only boy able to fly without the help of fairy dust. Much like the fabled Pan, local hero Pocket Power seems to defy the calendar and is still going strong at an age when most thoroughbreds are either enjoying a leisurely stud farm retirement, or advancing a second career.
