| What A Winter scoops National Equus Champion Sprinter award | |
| Mark Bass, 10/08/2012 | |

Owner’s Marsh Shirtliff, Bryn Ressell, Guy Shirtliff and owner/ trainer Mike Bass, were presented with the most coveted sprinting award in South African horse racing at the gala event held at Emperors Palace on Wednesday night. The Western Winter entire clinched the title of Champion Sprinter as well as Champion older male in his respective categories, effectively doubling up his awards at the Western Province ceremony which he earned a few days prior.
What A Winter edged out Val De Ra, Shea Shea and Delago Delux to scoop the sought-after award and has now set a solid platform for a lucrative breeding career in the future. Equus awards like these go a long away in ensuring he will have every success at stud when he does eventually retire. But for now, with the Cape summer season ahead of us, he has ample more opportunity to enhance his already impressive CV.
National horse of the year was no debate when awarded to Champion miler Variety Club owned by Markus and Ingrid Jooste. The three-year-old colt racked up six wins and two seconds from his eight starts during the season – taking his career record to nine wins from 14 starts.
Princess Victoria was named Champion Three Year Old Filly following wins in the Cape Fillies Guineas and the Garden Province Stakes while Champion mare Igugu was awarded champion older filly for her outstanding victory in the J&B Met.
The Breeder Award for Exceptional International Achievement went to Maine Chance Farms for the stud’s product Ato winning the Grade 1 Krisflyer Sprint in Singapore.
The deceased, and now legendary home bred sire, Jet Master received his 6th consecutive Championship sire’s award.
