Odessa dispersal – A rare opportunity

With such a rich heritage and steeped breeding tradition, it will be a sad day for South African Racing when we bid farewell to the end of a great breeding era as Odessa stud disperses their final band of mares on public auction this week.

Lionel Cohen, CEO of Equimark Equestrian Sales and owner of D Cohen & Sons, is a name that has become synonymous with achievement when it comes to breeding and racing in our country. The stud was established in 1939 by Loskey Cohen and was taken over by Loskey's son, Colin, in 1955 who in turn, passed it on to Lionel 1986. Through the various generations of Odessa, the stud has proven to be one of the most successful stud farms in the countries history.

Lionel’s choice to retire from the professional breeding ranks has admittedly not been an easy one. A little over a year ago, after having sold their14 000 hectare property in Ceres, a plan was already set forth to relocate his family to Australia, while still intending to keep a fair business interest in his native home of South Africa.

“This has been a difficult and emotional decision for me. Odessa Stud has been such a rich and integral part of my family for many years, but having recently sold the farms, I do not intend purchasing further land to develop another stud career in SA. I will however be pursuing a career abroad within the racing and breeding industry, while at the same time commuting back to SA for personal and business interests”

Lionel will be retaining an interest in breeding in South Africa through a number of his current fillies in training and will also have a firm interest in breeding and trading from his Australian residence. On Thursday afternoon a total of 57 lots from Odessa Stud will fall under hammer.

D Cohen and Sons (the name by which the stud farm trades under) currently lie second on the current NHRA breeding statistics with 79 winners from 711 starts (11% winning average) and stakes of R6 .8 million.

The stud has twice been South Africa's Champion Breeder and has bred the winner of the country's most prestigious race, the Durban July, on three occasions – Firstly with Space Walk in 1994, Super Quality in 1997 and the most recent of which with Super Brand's half-brother, Trademark in 2001, who went on to race successfully in the U.S, winning two grade II races at Saratoga in 2003.

Among the studs numerous notable descendants and group 1 victories, include Counter Action - a dual group I winner, Model Man - South Africa's first equine millionaire and Crimson Palace, the 2004 Beverly D Stakes winner, was born and raised on Odessa Stud for her breeder, A.P. Joubert. More recently, the likes of South African and International Champion filly, Sun Classique, as well as star filly Emblem Of Liberty, winner of this years Grade 1 Paddock Stakes.

The Equimark Vintage Mare and Weanling Sale takes place this Thursday 21 May which has 181 entries. With the inclusion of the Odessa dispersal a total of 281 lots will be catalogued for auction.

The sale commences at 11 am at the Equimark sales centre in Durbanville and presents a rare opportunity for breeders wishing to enjoy a small a part of what has proven to be an historic and traditional band of broodmares.
