July Diary - Daily entries and pics leading up to Saturday

Wednesday - We awoke to a fairly chilly Durban this morning and arrived on track at 6 am. It ‘s the first time I have seen the horses up here since they left Cape Town and they look great,  most of them are really thriving in the warm conditions, particularly Air Combat who caught my eye first when he walked past. Boy has he filled out!

We just gave some light work and canters to most of our horses today and the track seemed pretty quiet all round. Julie Alexander interviewed Mike on all his runners for the Under Starters Orders show I presume, and tomorrow we will give our runners their final breeze ups. I will try and catch the gallops on camera and place it on the website tomorrow afternoon.

Happy with all our July runners and we are off to Sibaya to view the crop for tomorrow’s sale.

Thursday Final breeze ups went well and their work is now done.

Jockey Fayd’Herbe sprinted up the big horse and was very happy with his final workout and seems confident that he is at his best.

Our long time employee and work rider Belinda Haytread has made the trip up this week and gave Thundering Jet and River Jetez their last sprint ups. She reported that Jetez, as usual impressed her with very good work and put up a game gallop.  Belinda also said that Thundering Jet delivered his best work yet, is striding out exceptionally well and gave her the best feel for the day. From a good draw of 3 and 150/1 on offer he must be made great value on his current well being and we are hoping for a big run from him if he can repeat his work he delivered today.

Kelvin Jupp breezed up his mount Meteor Shower and said that his work was not overly inspiring but he is well within himself. He never really puts up good work at home so you can't tell much from that and we hope that he will put forward his best effort on track on Saturday.

Friday

Their preparations have gone perfectly. The runners all had light canters this morning and all their work is done. Let’s hope we have some good fortune tomorrow.

Bad news is rain is forecast for July Day with a 60% chance. If it rains a great deal, the soft underfoot conditions won’t particularly suit Pocket Power who will have to give away that much weight in the heavy going, but no signs of any impending heavy rains, so it’s not too much of a concern.

All our other runners will have chances on the day, and perhaps a little more value could be found particularly about Diamond Quest and Judged Excellent who are really fit and well.

For punters the card looks particularly tricky in my opinion, and I believe we could be in for some full-size payouts on Saturday. With regards to my selections for the July itself, should I play a quartet I would play as follows:

If playing with a banker, I would go with Pocket Power and throw in all of Our Giant, River Jetez, Kapil, Big City Life, Buy And Sell, Smart Banker, Tropical Empire, Thundering Jet and Zirconium to fill the money. For the more cautious player I would just float Pocket and Jetez with same fill. Come rain or shine we are sure in for a cracking day’s horse racing tomorrow and if the powers that be are on our side, perhaps we will be fortunate enough to see our great champion in the winner’s box once again.

Hold thumbs and enjoy the day.
