2009 EQUUS awards – Three nominees for Equimark graduates THE 2009 Equus Awards, honouring the Champions of South African racing for the 2008/9 racing season, will be held on Thursday, 13 August at the Emperors Palace Entertainment Centre. Equimark have three nominated graduates among these nominees including the 2009 Vodacom Durban July champion Big City Life (Equimark 2007 RTR sale). The 3year old champion will confront Pocket Power and Smart Banker for honour as the 2009 middle distance Champion and Horse Of The Year, as well as for three year old champion Colt Emblem Of Liberty, who was unsold at the Equimark 2006 Vintage Sale, and who has been subsequently sold to Exhilaration vies for 2 year old champion colt and is Equimark’s third nominee. The son of Captain Al, notched up the first grade 1 of his career when fighting out a close finish with Bulsara in the grade 1 Premiers Champion Stakes earlier this month. The 2 year old colt trained by Dominic Zaki, was bred by the Alchemy Stud and purchased off the 2008 Equimark Vintage yearling sale.
