| Pocket Power seals his greatness | |
| Mark Bass, 10/01/2010 | |
The Power had it all to do two furlongs from home but produced his trademark finish he has become so renowned for, to win an incredible race under Bernard Fayd’Herbe in a new race record of 97,16 seconds. Despite a late charge from the fast closing Kapil, who tracked the champion throughout, he was eased up at the line by his regular pilot to win by a comfortable three quarters of a length. The Kotzen coupling of Big City Life and Fabiani stuck to their tasks gamely and ran on well to finish in joint third position, but were no match for the title holder under these conditions.
“He is a real champion and he proves it every time” said Fayd’Herbe who produced a scintillating ride aboard the big bay.
.
. Pocket Power, now approaching eight years old, shows no sign of stopping and this group 1 victory has now taken his tally to a massive 18 wins from 34 starts, which now includes 9 group 1 races and a further 5 graded races.
His incredible level of consistency over five racing seasons is the hallmark of his greatness. When Pocket Power steps up to the plate he always delivers, and what differentiates him from previous champions is his ability to keep this level of consistency for so long.
Last years victory when attempting to break the record was stressful and nerve-racking for all the connections but having him win for a fourth time has certainly been the most emotional and rewarding success we have had with him. He is a great champion and it is awesome to see the support from all the people on Saturday as the country embraced his accomplishment.
It is also another feather in the cap for trainer Mike Bass who has coaxed him so carefully throughout his career. “ It appears that the years are catching up with him a little, winning it the hard way this time. It is going to be that much more difficult for him now, but he won a great race and we are all extremely proud of his achievement”
Best wishes to Marsh Shirtliff and Arthur and Rina Webber on their very special accomplishment.
Pocket Power will take on a similar field in the J&B Met in three weeks as he tries for his fourth in a row, but this is going to be a far tougher task for him at the conditions. Despite this, the champion is sure to start a short favourite but win or lose he will go down as the greatest thoroughbred, certainly achievement wise, to ever race in this country.
A big thank you to L’Ormarins for their outstanding support of the Queens Plate and to all the many fans of Pocket Power who have shown their support and appreciation.
He has done the sport of horseracing most proud,
.
